Hi John, I have a bit of a quandary and maybe you can shed some light on it. Does any of this really matter? By “this” I mean all of the horrible stuff occurring in the Middle East and Africa as well as the political and social stupidity happening in the USA and Europe.

I find myself detaching from these events.

I don’t want to get wrapped up in the fear and anger that inevitably surrounds these things and is promoted by the corporate run media with its 24hr news.

What can I do about them?

Surround them with love and live my own life as presently as possible.

That’s what I’m trying to do anyway.

Your comments and questions are so significant and fundamental that I will do my best to share an answer to you and to my worldwide Internet community at large in this article.

To those new to HogueProphecy.com, Osho has been my meditation since 1980. If you find something inspiring in my words you may thank me but I must bow down and thank this dearest and most beloved friend and spiritual mentor for helping me get out of my own way to send these messages. If there is anything of true insight coming through me it is thanks to his meditation techniques that I have been practicing for 31 years and counting. They are tailored to the modern human being and not attempts to force such beings to do a thing most cannot do, simply sit and watch the breath.

Lord Buddha taught such a technique, which he called Vipassana to his 10,000 disciples. Its effect was aided by simpler times 25 centuries ago; his disciples lived agrarian, pre-industrial, pre-internet lives. They did not have as much on their mind, or saw as much outer stimulation of their minds as you or I endure.

To simply sit and watch the breath was possible for them.

For us, Osho suggested, we need help with more active, cathartic dancing and playful meditation steps taken before settling into such a mind watching, breath-by-breath state of meditation can happen.

Never has there been a time more distracting, loud, vulgar and over stimulated than ours. Never has there been a civilization where silence and stillness is avoided like the plague by endless entertainment and hectically paced toil at work, a frantic insatiable desire for more things, more stuff crammed in our homes, thoughts crammed in our heads.

And yet, what Osho and many other great mystics of the past have witnessed prophetically about out times is that our only salvation from a civilization-wide breakdown of humanity is a breakthrough that rediscovers the still, silent point of the witnessing and eternal consciousness. By reconnecting with this presence threading through all the moments of our lives in action and inaction, we might guide our destiny, this moment, every moment, peacefully and intelligently forward.

With the advent of the 21st century, we have entered the age of breakdowns. The age of the old humanity approaches its crash.

A new humanity is like a potential trapped within the dead seed shell that will not yield to the light, to the flowering for many centuries, up until now.

The shell of the past is cracking. I see it all around in the turmoil, in the traditions and dogmas I was trained to blindly believe in and follow. I cannot be so blind anymore to the sights and sounds of dead seed shells cracking all around.

The world of the old humanity is a husk of habit coming undone and crumbling all around us. It must happen. It is right. How else will the seed of our greatest destiny, to become a spiritually and physically balanced human race, happen unless the seediness of the past breaks down?

I feel that Osho spoke to this process of global breakdown leading to global breakthrough when he issued this prophecy 28 years ago:

Man is now living in his most critical moment and it is a crisis of immense dimensions. Either he will die or a new man will be reborn…It is going to be a death and resurrection. Unless human consciousness changes totally man cannot survive. As he is right now he is already outdated.

…During this period there will be every kind of destruction on Earth including natural catastrophes and man manufactured auto-suicidal efforts. In other words there will be floods which have never been known since the time of Noah, along with earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and everything else that is possible through nature. The Earth cannot tolerate this type of mankind any longer. There will be wars which are bound to end in nuclear explosions, hence no ordinary Noah’s ark is going to save humanity.

…The Holocaust is not going to be confined to certain places, it is going to be global so no escape will be possible. You can only escape within and that’s what I teach. I do not teach worship of God or any other ritual but only a scientific way of coming to your innermost core.

In 1999, I published the following commentary inspired by Osho’s prophecy. It might be good to review it today, five days before the next Earth Day celebration and review it once again, especially the day after Earth Day that happens every 22 April since 1970 in America and when the Earth Day celebration became an international phenomenon in 1990. Since that time, people all over the world come together to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s natural environment. When all the tree hugging festivals celebrating the natural world and offering demonstrations of eco-friendly solutions to sustain our common future have partied out on Earth Day, 22 April 2011, on will come the Earth Day After. It will come shorn of pomp and circumstance, parades and parties and all the propagated tricks to hold a momentary collective attention around the world to the greatest challenge set before us every Earth Day after day: to sustain our continued future on this Earth without destroying its ecological balance.

Stay attentive, humanity at large, on these 364 uncelebrated days each year since 1970 that mark a year from one Earth Day to the next. Keep your awareness constant; come collectively together in the work to sustain your future on this imperiled planet. This world will long survive you, but it is in doubt whether you and your civilization will survive Earth’s response to human abuse.

Osho’s Noah’s Ark of Consciousness prophecy was first published at Rajneeshpuram in 1983. I was there 28 Earth Days ago. I published my comment below in 1999, twelve Earth Day celebrations ago. I print it again just five days before Earth Day number 31 commences.

The coming decades of the early 21st century could see all of us writhing under an Internet of history’s first global emergency. No region, no nation, and no person on Earth will be exempt from the effects of another person’s misuse or overuse of the planet. The next 30 years will endure floods not seen in recorded history — if not directly from weather then from rising coastlines. Prophets foresee earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and even many scientists predict other natural disasters of a scope and magnitude never before encountered. It will be as if the Earth were rebelling against a humanity that chooses to remain retarded while it waits for the saviors to fix them. Nostradamus and other seers have predicted a plague of seventy wars across the world, triggered by the breakdown of water and food resources caused by rampant overpopulation. Many of these wars will end in nuclear explosions and the unleashing of biological and chemical-weapon plagues.

Attempts to escape may not only be futile but result in a missed opportunity. A major theme promoted by more renegade redeemers…is that you cannot escape from yourself. No matter how high the [Christian] Rapture carries you into the clouds — no matter how many Himalayan Mountains you can pull over your head to escape the disasters — the problem comes along for the ride.

You are the problem.

And you could be the answer.

The answer to averting the tribulations to come may arise out of each individual understanding and transcending the problem he or she has become.

Individual salvation requires something else entirely, a totally new vector. While some continue to wait for rescue in the form of a new ark of a New Jerusalem to mother-ship them out of harm’s way, there are visions that act like irritating flies dancing on the nose of such deliverance dreams, disturbing their reverie. These visions buzz with images of a travail from which there’s no escape. They say that the coming disasters will force all people to stand face to face with a heartbreaking and dream-breaking reality: No saints or saviors are coming to save us from ourselves.

We will have to become our own saviors.

One of the renegade mystics, Osho, believes the next Noah’s Ark needed to save humanity is a Noah’s Ark of Consciousness. It is not a UFO mother ship of nebulous construction built for one to wait out the seven years of tribulation behind a comet’s tail. It isn’t a cave city for survivalists. It is a hideaway so secret that you’d never guess how close it nudges against where you live even at this moment, every breath you take. It hides right behind the source of your existence.

This safe haven is a place that spiritual survivalists retreat to.

It is the ark of consciousness within each of us.

The pathway can be found to this “ark” by remaining silent and centered exactly in the middle of the cyclone of the coming times.

The path I follow to a Noah’s Ark of Consciousness is meditation.

PS–Earth Day approaches and Mother Nature is already sending us a message with violent, record breaking winter storms double the intensity and the frequency of 2010, rolling across the US every week through January into March. Now in April record floods hit the Red River in North Dakota and the grain belts of Canada a third year in a row. Winter storms become springtime phalanx after phalanx of super cell, globally warmed spring thunderstorms marching across two thirds of the United States every three to four days.

The most recent charge of thunderstorms ravaged wide areas of the US Southern states from Thursday through Saturday (14-16 April), killing over 40 people. The worst death-dealing destruction happened yesterday (Saturday) when Raleigh, and a number of other towns in North Carolina were smashed by a battle line of thunderstorms armed with tornadoes crashing across the Carolinas, Virginia, Delaware and southern New Jersey before heading out into the Atlantic. The season is early and already over 200 tornadoes have been reported, many of which are scouring a new “tornado alley” through states on the US-Canadian border, hundreds of miles farther north than the climate in previous years has allowed. Earth Day next Friday may very well be Mother Nature’s day of rage against human behavior towards the Earth, its oceans and its climate as I foresaw in weather predictions for 2011, such as this one, published back on 21 December 2010:

There’s a war on. A war against stupid.

In 2011, we enter year two of World War Three, Mother Nature’s war on us. This isn’t some pagan voodoo threat. The natural world is ill. It’s fighting back madder than ever in 2011. Her fevers will be hotter this coming spring and summer, her chills colder this winter, her flood of monsoon tears and cyclonic rages will redouble from what was seen in 2010.

The Muslim world has its own North Korean style hermit kingdom, virtually closed off from the world, from journalists and the Internet. Yet, just like a very positive variant of a virus, the spread of Arab revolution out of Tunisia to Libya’s west and out of Egypt to Libya’s east has infected the closed kingdom of strongman Muhammar Gaddafi with an information dis-ease. The vectors of this fever of openness with symptoms of democratic desires are cell phones, iPhones and laptops. It is a social disease of an electronic networked kind carried by Facebook and twittering software on electronic communication gadget “mosquitoes” that can infect even a starkly free-information quarantined country like Libya with a “malarial” wave of free speech contagious and fatal to dictators. Before Gaddafi’s regime came down with this “cold” a statement of the late Hafez al-Assad of Syria echoes again in the halls of Damascus, Teheran and down the totalitarian’s halls of Tripoli. Regimes in the Arab world with the guts to fire on their own rebellious people never fall. Now that totalitarian theory is being tested in Libya.

Word is getting out of a life-and-death struggle of the people of Libya with the Gaddafi regime. More “infections” of the truth buzz ring cell phones in and tweet out of Libya revealing cracks appearing in the cyber-hermetically sealed dictatorship.

I predict Gaddafi is going down violently, like Ceausescu in 1989, “Romanian-style”. The question is, how long will it take and how bloody will it be?

Comparisons have been drawn comparing the current regional revolution of Arabs to that of the fall of Eastern European communist regimes in 1989 when the Soviet Union gave up the standoff with the Western democracies as the Cold War began to end. The Berlin Wall fell, then the regime of East Germany collapsed. Where East Germany went so went the region, being the most influential satellite member of the Soviet Warsaw Pact alliance, just like Egypt in the Arab world today is a trendsetter.

The fall of the Erich Honeker regime in East Berlin caused a regional chain reaction across Eastern Europe with communist dictatorships falling mostly with a whimper except one: the eccentric strongman Nicolae Ceausescu of Romania, every inch as daffy a dictator as Gaddafi. Relinquish power? Only over his dead body, like Gaddafi threatens today.

Romanian street demonstrations quickly turned into massacres then pitched battles between opposing regular and police military units for and against Ceausescu in a short, sharp, tank shell riddled and exceedingly bloody civil war, ending with support of Ceausescu rapidly — literally — draining out like blood poured over the cobble stones of Bucharest. Ceausescu tried to escape, was arrested, lined up against a wall and summarily shot with automatic weapons.

What happens in Libya will be similar but I fear it will take longer and be a far more bloody civil war. Unlike Romania’s civil war, Libya is among the most deeply entrenched tribal societies in the Arab world. This civil war will be won or lost by who can manage the complex alliances and promise patronage to key Libyan tribes. Western Libya mostly has tribes allied with Gaddafi, whose stronghold is Tripoli.

Most of the rebels who seized Benghazi and the eastern half of Libya are from tribes out of favor with Gaddafi. The oil profits from the world’s 17th largest oil producer go mostly to the western Libyan tribes. Western Libya has oil fields but they just lost the lion’s share located in the eastern provinces. Gaddafi will try to take them back, promise reward of the rich oil industry to those western tribes and sub-tribes leaders who support the crackdown.

People inside Libya phone the outside world about Gaddafi’s acts of genocide. Believe it. This civil war could descend into a Libyan tribal life struggle to control oil resources before and Gaddafi is gone.

At the time of this writing (22 February 2011), Gaddafi and his tribal allies in the secret police and armed forces are ruthlessly fighting with and liquidating rebels in Tripoli while air strikes on Benghazi continue.

I predict Gaddafi intends to launch his heavily armored forces against Benghazi, the heart of the revolution.

The main Libyan tribe, Warfallah, numbers one million people. They were the first tribe to support the current anti-government movement. Not a good sign for the future of Gaddafi’s regime, or his plans for a crackdown because they man much of the militia and regular army forces of the 120,000-man Libyan military. Nevertheless, the Libyan military continues to unleash jet bombers, helicopter gunships and naval gunships taking pot shots at Benghazi. That indicates both sides have a mix of military might. People are taking sides.

Gaddafi pays for an unknown number of ruthless sub-Saharan mercenaries numbering 7,000 operatives, including tank and armored units in what is known as Gaddafi’s Pan Islamic Legion. I sense because of his dwindling support from the Warfallah, he is calling in favors from many more guerilla and terrorist forces across Africa whose insurrections he bankrolled for four decades. These gathering mercenary forces flying in by transport are the spear point of a planned strike on Eastern Libya. It is because of them and the atrocities to come that Gaddafi will soon lose support from all of his people — East and West Libyans — and come to bloody ruin

Another reason why this could be far worse than the Romanian revolution of 1989, Ceausescu’s bloody fall did not rock oil prices across the world threatening high prices that could stall economic global recovery. Libyan oil fields have stopped pumping and exporting. Uncertainly hit the stock markets hard on Tuesday with the Dow Jones dropping -178.46 points. The Oil APR price today closed $96.92 a barrel, close to passing an ominous threshold, rising beyond the $100 mark. The last time that happened was in 2008. Then came the Great Recession.

The week is young, like the Libyan civil war. Prepare for triple digit per oil barrel prices sinking economic growth soon. What is coming is not a stock market correction of the DOW Jones by five or six percent. The next economic crisis begins. The one I foresaw in detail. Triggered by oil prices and dated in my predictions for 2010 and forecasts for 2011.

If I were you, reader, I would top my gas tank. The fall of Gaddafi is coming but this Jim Jones of Arab dictators could take the Libyan oil industry with him in a bloodbath stretching for weeks. That means Africa’s fourth largest oil exporter will be off line for a while. That means oil exports across Africa are disrupted. Expect this to bring fuel and food riots in South Africa. Europe is the biggest importer of Libyan oil. Expect this to trigger another EU financial crisis that will impact the US and Chinese economy, as I detail in Predictions for 2011.

The 16th-century French prophet, Michel Nostradamus (1503-1566) might have set down a verse or two about the fate of Muhammar Gaddafi.

Century 4 Quatrain 62 of his history of the future Les Propheties states:

Vn coronel machine ambition,
Se saisira de la plus grand’armée,
Contre son prince fainte inuention,
Et descouuert sera soubz sa ramée.

A colonel will through machinating (plotting) ambition.
He will seize the greatest part of the army,
Against his Prince through a false invention.
He will be discovered under his branches.

In 1995 I wrote the following interpretation that was published on p. 345 of my 1,000-page tome Nostradamus: The Complete Prophecies:

In 1969 Colonel Gaddafi overthrew King Idris in the Libyan Revolution. He seized the greatest part of the Libyan army’s support in a secret coup (false invention). The final line of the quatrain may cryptically relate details of a notorious milestone in Gaddafi life to be reached 17 years later. On the night of 5 April 1986 … a terrorist bomb exploded in a Berlin disco, killing two people, including a US serviceman. The [US] Reagan government chose to find evidence suggesting that the order for the bombing came from Gaddafi. (Actually, other far more compelling evidence implicating the Syrians and Iranians in the bombing was ignored by Reagan. But I suppose an attack on the most vulnerable terrorist-sanctioning nation would suit his political movie script better than a military attack on the deep heartland of Islamic terrorism.) Nine days later…US bombers attacked terrorist-related targets in Libya. Bombs were also aimed at the Al Aziziya barracks in the desert outside of Tripoli where, it is said, Gaddafi and his family sometimes reside in a bedroom designed to look like a Bedouin tent. Gaddafi’s two sons were slightly injured by flying glass and his 15-month-old adopted daughter, along with 100 people, were killed in what was clearly an assassination bombing mission. Gaddafi survived unscathed.

A translation of line 4 is difficult. In earlier books I had taken the figurative meaning of ramée to deduce a green arbor or green flag symbolizing Gaddafi’s Libya. A more down-to-earth translation of ramée as branches might better describe Gaddafi the moment two bombs slammed into his tennis court and another took out his front door. One might have found him crouched beneath the branches (or legs) of his desk, hiding his face from the flying glass.

Rebooting my interpretation fourteen years later, let us take on the riddle of line four in the context of Gaddafi’s near future.

With the word ramie Nostradamus may describe the scene of his end. It means branches; arbor, green bows, green arbor. The etymology could mean by extension a green Bedouin tent, the green Libyan flag, or perhaps the scene of his end is such a tent pitched in an oasis. Although I do not personally believe he will leave Libya alive, I could be wrong. Gaddafi may escape to the green arbor, bows and luscious vegetation of the tropics. He could fly out of the desert living out his days a guest of dictator Hugo Chavez in Venezuela. Perhaps it is there he will be killed when Chavez falls.

Another quatrain and famous anagram indexed Century 10 Quatrain 96 could describe the life and bloody fate of Gaddafi and his son:

Religion du nom des mers vaincra,
Contre le secte fils Adaluncatif,
Secte obstinee deploree craindra,
Des deux blessez par Aleph & Aleph.

The Religion named after the ocean will overcome,
Against the sect of the son Adaluncatif,
The obstinate, deplored sect will be afraid,
Of the two wounded Aleph (A) and Aleph (A).

The anagram Adaluncatif has baffled interpreters for the past several centuries. I take it to be a riddle about Gaddafi. Adaluncatif is an anagram. Reshuffle the letters and they form “Cadafi Luna.” Allowing for phonetic spelling changes, it is possible to get “Gaddafi Luna,” “Gaddafi of the Moon,” or “Gaddafi of the Crescent of Islam.”

Now the next riddle. What Religion is named after the ocean that will overcome the sect and son of Gaddafi?

The term “Oceanic religion” could be somewhat awkwardly describing Gaddafi’s bed on the night of the US bombing raid on his home in 1986.

Author and former British Parliament member George Tremlett has been one of the few Westerners invited into Gaddafi’s house in the center of a military barracks outside of Tripoli. The bombed bedroom is enclosed in glass, like a shrine, without one shard of shrapnel or piece of broken masonry disturbed since the night of the bombing. Tremlett’s book Gaddafi: The Desert Mystic contains a photograph of the bed; at the head we see an illuminated and vividly colored panoramic photo of ocean waves crashing on the rocks. Could this wall papered photo religiously bemuse the 16th-century prophet?

A number of religions, such as Tibetan Buddhism, describe themselves as oceanic.

We could go out on a limb a little further.

Around the same time in early 1986 that US jets bombed Gaddafi’s bedroom, the Oregon Commune of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh disbanded. Bhagwan was in the midst of a world tour seeing him thrown out of 21 countries by CIA and Reagan administration pressure until his meditation resort/university was reestablished in Pune, India in 1987.

Rajneesh changed his name to Osho before he died in early 1990 from what his followers and doctors claim was heart disease accelerated by being poisoned with the heavy metal Thallium in November 1985. He claimed to have been poisoned during the three days he disappeared from all contact by the press and his lawyers, while under the custody of US federal agents.

Rajneesh explained that the new name Osho was derived from William James’ word “oceanic,” which means dissolving into the ocean. Oceanic describes the experience of being simply religious without the limits of mafias of the soul or dead dogmas. You are it and it is an oceanic, blissful experience.

Osho is also used as a Zen salutation that can essentially be translated as “oceanic consciousness.”

Gaddafi gets bombed around the same time the guru of a new religion metaphorically named after the ocean is spreading its message on a world tour. Though this association of Gaddafi and Osho might sound far-fetched, it would not be the first time Nostradamus dated an incident in future history by chronicling two unrelated events happening at the same time only as a time clue rather than having any direct connection.

Nostradamus also hid more than one decodable meaning in his anagrams. (For instance, see Mabus.)

The anagram Adaluncatif gives us Cadafi Luna. Yet, remove “A(dal)u(n)cat(i)f” and we also get Nidal.

Gaddafi was once a close friend and patron to the notorious Palestinian terrorist Abu Nidal in the 1980s.

Drop the c and the remaining letters a-u-a-t-f can phonetically spell “fatau,” for Fatah, as in the Palestinian Fatah party.

Fatah now runs the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank region under Israeli occupation. At one time it included a terrorist branch known at the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO).

In other words, Cadafi Luna is linked to Abu Nidal (terrorist) and the PLO of Fatah as it may relate to the near future.

The secular workweek begins with Gaddafi Luna threatened with overthrow. The workweek will soon end with Friday — (the Muslim holy day, church day, their “Sunday” according to their calendar).

This Friday watch the Fatah Party of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank join the radical Palestinian party of Hamas, controlling the Gaza Strip for a “Day of Rage” demonstration across all Israeli occupied Palestinian territories.

Gaddafi, a patron of Hamas, will drag his country down into civil war this week while the Arab Revolution reaches the doorstep of Israel this Friday in a protest against the US veto that put a kibosh on a recent United Nations Security Council resolution to declare Israeli settlement construction illegal.

Watch Friday when the Arab Revolution amps up in intensity to a whole new dimension, shifting from an uprising against the oppression of its own Arab-born dictators to an rebellion against oppression of the US-backed Israelis in Palestine.

If these interpetated layers of the Adaluncatif anagram message are correct, Gaddafi’s civil war and fall is linked to the coming rage in Palestinian streets.

Where then do the clues walk us to next?

Solving the riddle of the last two lines of 10 Q96:

The obstinate, deplored sect will be afraid,
Of the two wounded Aleph (A) and Aleph (A).

The sect of Gaddafi is afraid of the two wounded A and A. How do we decode just what the Hebrew letter for A (Aleph) and its Arabic variant (Alif) represent?

Gaddafi intends to give his dictatorship to one of his sons, of which he has seven. The most likely grooms for dad’s dictatorship are Saif al-Islam al-Gaddafi and Mutassim Gaddafi.

The prophecy might imply the two will be wounded, after the father is deposed.

Apparently, these Hebrew/Arabic letters are not the same as our letter A. Instead they correspond not to the vowel sound “ah” but to the glottal stop that precedes it. With that said, one cannot rule out that Nostradamus the obscurer would lead the idle seeker off the etymological trail. Perhaps he was more interested in the spelling of the word in Roman letters to hide a name consisting of two “A”-sounds when spoken?

Saif al-Islam al-Gaddafi.

If so, then the first and second Alif could represent a kind of phonetic spelling of the most likely heir apparent’s name, Saif (a)l-Islam (a)l-Gaddafi (meaning Sword of Islam from Gaddafi)

He is the son of Adaluncatif. The designated successor to lead the obstinate and deplored sect of Gaddafi’s mutant Marxist-Socialist-Islamic system now rejected by the people of Libya.

Successor A and A will be mortally wounded?

A and A also could be Nostradamus hinting the most popular chant of the demonstrators in Libya: Allahu Akbar! (God is Great!) In this way the faith of Allah is the oceanic religion foreseen to succeed over this obstinate, deplored sect.

If we move beyond all the tangled speculation inherent in picking loose a line of clarity out of cryptic Nostradamus, the fires of revolution overtaking the Middle East could cleanse the way for a better and more democratic era.

My oracle’s forecasts for 2010 and those published for 2011 indicate sudden and unexpectedly positive breakthroughs in the Middle East are quite possible.

Israel in 2011 has an excellent opportunity to be a positive game changer, supporting Arab democratic aspirations while isolating radical Islam based in Iran. I wrote a chapter about this potential destiny in my prophecies for 2011.

In the final chapter We have Appeasers for Our Times my oracle sent this message:

The enemy is our unconsciousness as a species, our willingness to believe rather than “know” our collective soul, our willful postponement and outright resistance to awakening our responsibility to be gardeners — not rapacious parasites — of this Earth. And, if Mother Earth must, she will scourge us, starting in 2010 through 2011 with a spike in climate change disasters never before seen.

One of the paradoxes of fever is that it brings on chills. The cradles of the CO2 belching Industrial Revolution have been hammered by historic blizzards. First, it was Europe, now the Eastern United States, and the capital where many of the most earth unfriendly legislation supporting human abuse of the earth are sustained. The capitol wherein reform is a thing talked, debated but never acted upon to the degree that can lower the degree of climate change. The historic blizzards now bury Washington D.C. in feet of snow not seen in the human memory. The snowdrifts exceed those of the Knickerbocker Blizzard of 1928, over 82 years ago. We might have to go back to the 1790s when President Washington walked the earth to record similar snowfalls in Washington D.C.

I said in Predictions for 2010 that shortly after the toothless appeasement of climate change drafted in the Copenhagen Accords in December, the new year would slam Europe and other regions with record-breaking blizzards. People will think that global warming has ended, until a few months hence when equally extreme, record breaking high temperatures make the memory of the new year’s blizzards melt and vanish like a snowflake in an oven of summer heat waves and forest fires.

For two decades I have been making the following forecast and now along the buried boulevards of the US capital come the first bitter blizzard fruits of that vision. A new decade of record-breaking snowfalls has arrived not to hasten the end of global warming but to herald it.

Back in Predictions for 2009, I wrote the following passage when my corner of the world experienced record-breaking snow and blizzard conditions in December of 2008. The picture above was taken of me in that blizzard in the usually mild and rainy Pacific Northwest. It inspired the following explanation why white outs of frost bode the first chills of an oncoming and global climate fever:

Global warming is coming, they say. The snowy burial mound in my driveway where I think my car is buried begs to differ. People around my little village up on an island in the Puget Sound just 45 minutes north of Seattle, WA, soon became familiar with the fellow wrapped up head to foot trudging through snow drifts frosty with temperatures in the teens Fahrenheit. There’s that guy leg and Sorrel boot shoveling a path through the snowdrift who talks on radio and TV about global warming. The only thing warm about him this December 2008 is the scarlet color of the thermal winter work jump suit he hasn’t been seen wearing since he was a ditch man in a pipe crew at Rajneeshpuram, Oregon.

Sea level islands and farmlands of the usually rainy western half Washington State aren’t known for feet of snow lingering on the ground for a month and lows in the lean teens and single digits. The final month of 2008 visited upon the upper half of America’s lower 48 states a 49th-state Alaskan blast of arctic snows, blizzards and ice rain of historic proportions.

Global warming you say?

Believe it!

Global warming is here. Climate change is real.

That fellow in the scarlet suit, on breaks from writing this book to trudge down in blizzard conditions to his neighborhood store for victuals, brushing the ice off his beard and eyelids has been writing books and articles, or predicting on radio and TV for a decade, about just such unanticipated arctic blasts juiced by record snowfall and ice storms as evidence of climate change on a slow boil. You will recognize global warming is in full approach when record snow events fall as they did in December 08 across the Pacific Northwest and reached their Ice Age ivory fingers to snow white top mountains as far south as Southern California and Arizona. Even that exceedingly rare event of snow falling on New Orleans in late 2008 is just the kind of Arctic event my oracle screams is a symptom of climate change warm-up. In 2009 and onwards into the next dozen years or so, you will see more of these snow events stemming from a warmer climate pumping ever larger volumes of tropical and subtropical moisture farther north than ever before. These blasts of Polynesian pineapple pluie (that’s rain in French) collide with descending drafts of polar cold to produce snow events. Warmth wets these cold snaps of snow.

…The guy in the scarlet red thermal suit with rainbow colored wrap and woolen knit hat had been telling his neighbors during our last rare winter blast, “Enjoy the snows. They’re a passing symptom of global warming. At a certain point in the next decade tropical moisture will butt heads with arctic blasts, producing record snow events until the atmosphere’s aggregate increase in temperature muscles the Arctic air back north to its melting polar bear dens and all you’ll experience down around Seattle is a winter of cool monsoon rains.”

Michael Jackson, singing Earth Song from his HIStory Album.

“You must be the last person on earth to buy this,” said the music shop salesman when he slid a cassette tape of Thriller my way in Portland, Oregon, on one of my rare forays out of a spiritual commune into the “big city” in 1985. I have ecstatically danced along my spiritual path and the music of Michael Jackson came along triggering the light foot fantastic.

Those of you who’ve watched me dance at our local Langley Washington music fairs called Choochokam, always held the weekend after the Fourth of July, know what I mean. The ethereal voice, harmonies and astral funk music of Michael Jackson’s songs in Off the Wall or Thriller albums was my holy Prasad of party song in the 1980s as was The Friends of Mr. Cairo by John Anderson and Vangelis. Hey, former communards of the Ranch. Do you remember us rockin’ and ether-astral projectin’ to “State of Independence”? How about the way we flew off the collective launch pad to the stars to Michael Jackson’s “You Want To Be Startin’ Somthin’” after a 12-hour workday, like it was nothing?

When I was a security guard on a lonely stretch of the County Road, we called Buddha Grove, meandering down the high desert hills into our communal ranch of meditators, I stuck that Thriller cassette into the machine, slid the switch to volume full-max, got out of my booth and danced the gravel road conjuring the rising dawn. Thank you Michael for everything: the good, the weird and the transcendental!

Michael passed Thursday — the moment before I posted the last bulletin (The 21 Challenge). That’s where I’ll remember where I was when I heard the King of Pop had died. Today (Saturday) the Internet around the world is overloading and overheating because of the global downloading of his songs. I’m listening to my favorites as I write this. I thought I’d add to the traffic trying to find the musical-prophetic angle to Jackson’s passing.

As much as I’ve loved everything Michael wrote, I do have two hands-down favorites. They don’t come from his heyday but at the beginning of his long twilight into seclusion and the long and dangerous tightrope moonwalk inward into the existential mystery. It is a balancing act that so many sensitive souls like Jackson have walked on an ever thinning line of awareness that either can lead to the farther shore of meditation but more than often ends with a plunge into insanity and/or drug abuse.

I love his “Stranger in Moscow” because it speaks to the meditator on the path in me, trying to make sense of the lonely one seeking the freedom of aloneness who is encountering that “Stranger in my skull” — Michael’s haunting ballad about his night walking alone in the streets of Moscow after a concert. In that song, head upturned, eyes closed, he faced the rain of divine silence and embraced the stranger that is being.

“Stranger in Moscow” is my second favorite.

My first favorite is from the same HIStory album released in the mid-1990s. It shares a meditative and empathic glimpse into the meditator’s life when consciousness blows open a door beyond self. One sees one’s little dewdrop contain the oceanic compassion for this world, its people and all that live and are unconsciously destroying it.

I speak of Michael Jackson’s “Earth Song.”

The song and incomparable video is a sonic-cinematic metaphor for the awakening of all of us, one individual at a time — hopefully in time, before it is too late — to turn back the devastation of war, deforestation, and mass extinction with a great wind of love, intelligence and consciousness. This song and video are works of prophecy. Michael may have passed on, but “Earth Song” continues to share with us a vision of global climate crisis and renewal logged nearly 2,000 years before it happened by a mysterious mystic known as Hermes Trismegistus.

The more poetically occult will say he was the founder of ancient Hermetic mystery schools in Egypt and one of the earliest prophets to warn us of a stagnating atmosphere coming from the Global Warming.

Scholars that are more objective say Hermes Trismegistus was a philosopher or a series of philosophers using the pen name living in Alexandria during the first few centuries after Christ. His rebellious writings against the cut-and-dried, rote teaching of Greek and Platonic orthodoxy were compiled in the Hermetica.

Sources that are more subjective place Hermes T. far back into antediluvian times as the great Atlantean adept, god-realized or actually a god in his own right. According to them, he founded the Egyptian mystery schools after the Atlantean island empire became “all wet” in one climactic inundation as far back as twelve thousand years ago. This Hermes is credited with setting the foundation for nearly all Western mystical teachings. In his book The White Goddess, Robert Graves specifies Hermes’ cosmic role as the “Leader of Souls.” He is responsible for the creation of astronomy, and his teachings are even considered by occult researchers to be the root of the Tarot.

Hermes Trismegistus was an early forewarner of humanity’s disconnect with ecological balance when recorded in a dialogue with Asclepius he decried, “They will no longer love this world around us, this incomparable work of God, this glorious structure which he has built, this sum of good made up of things of many diverse forms…”

It almost reads to me like a script describing Earth Song’s scenes of Amazonian natives watching the forest trees being chopped down and African Masai beholding climate change desiccating their range with the elephants carcasses dismembered of their ivory by poachers and the great herds of Giraffe and Wildebeest vanishing like ghosts of extinction

Then, as if Hermes had written the video shooting script about forests felled replaced by forests of smoke stacks belching poison into earth’s skies, he goes on to describe a world of polluted skies that rings true for our times 1,900 years later: “Then the earth no longer stands unshaken. All voices of the gods will of necessity be silenced and dumb. The fruits of the earth will rot; the soil will turn barren, and the very air will rot. The soil will turn barren, and the very air will sicken in sullen stagnation. After this manner will old age come upon the world.”

Yet, it is out of this coming ecological global disaster that a divine purification comes. Hermes, just like in Jackson’s Earth Song, visualizes us turning back the hand of war. We turn back the hand of ecological devastation, as if at last our minds, our hearts and our hands served a divine call of healing, and a great wind came to blow all our iniquities away as we, like Michael Jackson in Earth Song, blown in the wind, hanging onto dead tree branches, begins to ask those core questions:

Michael Jackson sang:

What have we done to the world
Look what we’ve done
What about all the peace
That you pledge your only son…
What about flowering fields
Is there a time
What about all the dreams
That you said was yours and mine…
Did you ever stop to notice
All the children dead from war
Did you ever stop to notice
The crying Earth the weeping shores

And 1,900 years earlier, Hermes Trismegistus answered:

“[God] will call back to the right path those who have gone astray; he will cleanse the world from evil, now washing it away with water floods, now burning it out with fiercest fire, or again expelling it by war and pestilence. And thus will bring back his world to its former aspect, so that the Kosmos will once more be deemed worthy of worship and wondering reverence.”

In this vision, Hermes Trismegistus parallels the prophecies of the Hopi Native Americans. Destiny necessitates a scourge of rising oceans, floods, droughts, fires, and other ecological disasters — wars and population decimating plagues even — the thorough slap in our collective faces to reawaken humanity’s sense of consciousness and harmony with the universe, in which it has been so blessed to exist. The path to enlightenment is ever a subtle or literal passage through a great death and renewal.

Hermes Trismegistus declares, “Such is the new birth of the Kosmos. It is a making again of all things good; a holy and awe-striking restoration of all nature and it is wrought in the process of time by the eternal will of God. For God’s will has no beginning. It is ever the same and as it now is, even so it has ever been, without beginning. For it is the very being of God to purpose good.”

The Hermetic teaching points to the divine spark in all things. We therefore are vehicles or vessels of the divine good that is never born nor ever dies. All we need do is remember this, each moment, each “now”, and act accordingly in every “now” henceforward to restore our Kosmos.

“Fair well” Michael. Nothing of being ever dies. Thus, you and I will never die, and we will sing the Earth Song Eternal.
