In the year 2011, have ears to hear the first random chimes of the unsustainable before the bell toll quickens, multiply, gathering chimes in number down a decade of denial until it rings in constant, cacophonous alarm.

The year 2011 marks the crying advent of the seven-billionth child. The time the mainstream world will begin to experience the first inklings of a supersystem collapse to come in the 2020s.

Predictions for 2011

I have wanted to write about this most significant milestone since it was estimated we passed the 7-billion mark sometime this summer. I was waiting for the news agencies around the world to report it. This soul passing out of the suffering vaginal curtains of some mother, somewhere in the developing world punctuating the fact that another billion people have been uploaded on the back of our overstressed Earth since 1998.

Nothing of significance came out of the media. Our dark little secret that we are breeding ourselves to civilization’s death is something, like our genitalia and sexual proclivities. We do not expose or mention these in public. Sexuality is the root of our life force and unless we bring it into the light to explore and understand this root of life force, the path “from sex to superconsciousness” – as Osho would define it – will never get off base energy ground.

The summer of the seven-billionth child’s advent is passing away with little fatal fanfare for what that means for the future of humanity. I have waited long enough for the media as has my readers. Just today one of them asked that it may be a good time to review a four-line quatrain verse from the 16th-century king of prophets, Nostradamus concerning the importance of the great number seven being reported. Does this perhaps indicate Nostradamus at least wished to report on our overpopulation over four centuries before it happened?

Century 10 Quatrain 74 reads first in its original 16th-century French with my translation:

An reuolu du grand nombre septiesme,
Apparoistra au temps ieux d’Hecatombe:
Non esloigné du grand eage milliesme,
Que les entrés sortiront de leur tombe.

The year the great seventh number is passed,
Appearing at the time of the games of slaughter:
Not far from the age of the great millennium (2000),
When the dead will come out of their graves.

Back in the mid nineteen-nineties, I recorded this interpretation for Nostradamus: The Complete Prophecies:

“During the Second Gulf War US pilots talked about airstrikes as if they were plays in an American football game. In a quatrain set for a future time when people treat the ultimate human tragedy of war with new lows of banality, it is a promise of hope that mankind will transcend its ancient tomb of fossilized traditions that have sustained endless cycles of war and rape, and be reborn into a new millennium of peace.

“The seventh number is the seventh millennium, the source of much contention and confusion amongst Nostradamus scholars, because the prophet counts us down to the date of doomsday or bloomsday with different starting dates. Either it comes in this millennium or a.d. 3242 — or even a.d. 3826.

“If before the year 2000 man can reject political power games in favor of a new awakening, the world may survive into the next millennium.”

We are on the other side of that millennium-turning cycle of centuries and as often is the case, these quatrains of Nostradamus may reveal more subtle and complicated layers of presaging hint to what this quatrain is dating when the milestone of great number seven is reuvolu (an old French word meaning accomplished, completed, finished or passed).

I would say that the millennium passing and the world population reaching seven billion 11 years later frame a date pinpointing a time when humanity’s stresses upon itself and the world will require we enter a period of apocalypse out of which may arise human childhood’s end.

We have passed the great millennium in 2000 and the great seventh number, the seventh billion, has been passed. The days of tribulation leading potentially to transformation of the human race begins now. The alarm bells ring in 2011 sounding an unsustainable future for “Stupid”. Time to awaken from our superstitious religions, our ignorance-based faiths. Time to redefine what it is to be human, tame our population explosion rather than keep taming and raping our Mother Earth.

I would say Nostradamus uses the biblical metaphor in the final line as a message to awaken, to see humanity reborn. Let us rise from the graves of our unconscious habit and fossilized dogmas. Let us be renewed.

This is the time to understand what the true meaning of Apocalypse is and become that Apocalypse.

The Greeks never intended this world to be a noun of doom. Apocalypse literally means “to uncover” or “to expose” the truth. There is a naked truth here, hiding beneath the changing fashions of syntax. However, the price of truth revealed might be a degree of change one is not ready to risk. Why else, then, do we react with such hopelessness and fear to a word that signifies the real hiding behind the false? Can we see only catastrophe in the revelation of truth?

My favorite weekly paper milled news magazine came out of my P.O. Box 666 all black and white and red with hyperbloggic flying subtitles like How Ignorant are you? and They have found Atlantis? on the periphery of an airbrushed tidal wave behind the manic main title APOCALYPSE NOW: Tsunamis. Earthquakes. Nuclear Meltdowns. Revolutions. Economies on the Brink. What the #@%! Is Next?

I noticed another indication overlooked by Newsweek editors of the oncoming apocalypse in that title. Nostradamus foresaw one of its first warning signs to be a loss of learning and letters. The Newsweek copy editor’s computer did what mine does. When spelling “is” after an exclamation mark, the computer automatically capitalized “Is”. The editor in a decadent, fin de seicle lapse, left it capitalized.

I turn to page three to read what the new Editor-in-Chief named ??!#@%!?? has to say about the new edition. I cannot make out her signature. I mean, is her name Tina Brawn, Eva’s lost descendant, or is it Tuna Brawn, or Tina Brown…???

Whoever she is, she is also the Chief Editor of the e-zine The Daily Beast. She must be as advertised, an intrepid e-News blogger type. Her declining handwriting skills are a giveaway. Being solely on the computer keyboard day and night does to handwriting what wearing Darth Vader’s helmet and mask for 20 years did to Anakin Skywalker’s facial skin color and tone: make it pasty, slack and unrecognizable. Her handwriting is getting almost as unintelligible as mine.

Anyway, one sees “Tuna” (Tina?) in sketchy portrait all bled white like Anakin-cum-Vader. All the Newsweek in-house writers and editors must submit to this cartoonish portrait vogue next to their articles. They each look to me like variations of a white faced clown caught in a paparazzi camera flash semi-made up before painting red round cheeks and gluing on the bulbous red nose had happened. (Gad! I hope she, or Nial Ferguson, or the other staffers are succumbing to a guilty pleasure by reading Hogueprophecy.com today because this is my “embarrassing-portrait” intervention in print. Please lose the half-painted and powdered clown look. It’s indecent Bozo!)

So, along with Newsweek cover headlines like George H.W. Bush was not a wimp and Oprah Winfrey mending fences and Steven King on Can’t-Miss TV, the title of Tina (Tuna?) Brawn’s Notebook segment on page 3 contributed a less subtle alliteration like The Mayhem Mounts: Meltdowns, revolts and economic stress. Her intro had Rasputin-like resurrections of mad dog Gaddafi, asking, “has the world gone crazy” because of the onslaught of news?

All seriousness aside, the Tuna is onto something. History has sped up and it has got a Charlie “Sheen” about it. It is something HogueProphecy readers have been savvy about for years. You all know how bad it must be getting when the Cretaceous thunder-lizard corporate paper and dodo booby TV couch potato’s boob tuber news outlets actually blare out the stuff they usually ridicule us mammal bloggers and e-citizen journalists underfoot for saying. These are indeed apocalyptic times and they are going to continue to get more intense because apocalypse has gone mainstream in our lives.

Whoa there, reader!

How many of you think you know what the word apocalypse means? I doubt even Tina the Brown Tuna, Editor-in-Chief of Newsweek knows because like most news writers, when it comes to eschatalogical, end time themes, her journalism and etymology skills are put aside. Just say “Apocalypse” or “Nostradamus” to these people and they reach for their clichés about the new age and people with placards saying the end is near, blah blah… With shallow consistency, they uphold bromides and brush-offs usually supported by the even more shallow understanding of their smug audiences who passively let the news writers think for them as they patronize them.

Apocalypse is not what most of you habitually lull yourselves into thinking it is. So, when I say the apocalypse is going mainstream, at least understand fully what I mean.

…The taste and smell of fear experienced around the phenomenon of apocalypse originated with St. John of Patmos. In his essay, Apocalypse , D.H. Lawrence attributes to the Bible’s final prophet a “second-rate mind” that dirtied the meaning of apocalypse enough to make it the war cry for overzealous members of Christ’s flock. These hysterics forgive poor sinners today, secretly hoping they’ll get their own in spades on Judgment Day.

Despite St. John’s fear-mongering, he might be right in another sense. Perhaps there is a real catastrophe waiting for those unprepared to understand this word’s essential meaning. No one likes it when reality overturns one’s cup of dreams. No one can honestly say they’d gladly flash a revelatory torch inside the dark closet of their unconscious: before revelation’s light can dispel the darkness of unwanted fear and evil, it must first reveal the illusory stuff our dreams are made of.

The first time I had the pleasure of experiencing a performance of Ian McKellen in a role was back in the 1981 biographical film as D.H. Lawrence (1885-1930) entitled Priest of Love after one of the English writer's finest poems. I highly recommend viewing this movie, as it appears at last to be on DVD and Blue Ray. Here is a line from the poem, "I shall always be a priest of love and a glad one. Once you've known what love can do, there's no disappointment and no despair."

Perhaps the greatest dream is believing we are securely in control of our lives. And perhaps the revelation we fear most is discovering that security is a fairy tale.

St. John’s Sunday school nightmares aside, you don’t need to consult the [doomsday prophecy segment of this book] to get my future drift. The Judgment Day doesn’t need a God/Father figure or one more prophetic interpreter’s projection. It only needs a few too many CFCs leaking from the air conditioner, or just enough people to stand by and believe reductions of nuclear overkill can be called nuclear disarmament.

Judgment Day can be a secular phenomenon. It comes with just the right critical mass of denial to assure disasters have their day, whether God, the promise of heaven, or the nightmare of hell exist or not.

There is a prophetic train of thought that says we can’t get to the future from a present ruled by the motivation of the past ten thousand years. The next great age will only come for those who are ready to change, to drop those traditions of the dying Adamic Age which no longer work to keep the human race growing in consciousness. Tomorrow of Blessings — the second half of this book — takes a look at the minority future view. These prophecies indicate that in the eleventh hour an Apocalypse of Consciousness will preclude a global death.

Sooner or later, the mainstream news and the muddled mainstream minded masses will have to understand the deeper significance of our Apocalyptic times as a choice. Either between fulfilling a future of stupid, by habitually following the wrong understanding of Apocalypse; or, living and doing today what must be prepared and seeded to give birth to a future of revelation and enlightenment for the entire human race.

I will close today’s blog with a few visions of seers collected for Millennium Book of Prophecy. No matter if they are contemporary or ancient. Seen in this new Apocalyptically enlightened light these visions and predictions share in essence an understanding of the challenging times we have entered and the choice between two kinds of apocalypse we must make.

All manmade progress will be enlisted for destruction. However, the great fate will raise her hand in warning and will command to stop. If men will listen to the judicious ones among them and stop, it will be their advantage; if not, it will be their misfortune, and a great calamity will follow.

This is "Overpopulation" by John Pitre. I highly recommend you visit his web site and gallery of thought provoking, visionary art and social commentary (http://www.johnpitre.com/). I remember seeing this painting in a head shop back in the late 1960s or early 1970s. His satire illustrating a world gone naked, famine-ridden, impoverished, overcrowding the continents compelled me to think about the dangers of overpopulation when I was in my teens.

We can gauge to what extent we are fulfilling prophecies of humanity passing into a period of collective madness when a fundamentally right message is surrendered to and promoted by all the wrong, unbalanced people. As I write this James Lee, a frequent protester seen in front of the Maryland/Washington DC offices of Discovery Channel since 2008, today escalated his protest into a deadly hostage situation by storming the building with a gun and what appeared to be pipe bombs strapped to his torso.

Thanks to Internet access, the whole world watched and millions read Lee’s on-computer screen manifesto. In the last four hours he was alive, TV networks across the world filmed his web site and screen shot his message about saving the world and restoring its ecological balance. For a brief moment the whole world was watching and listening.

In Predictions for 2010, I warned the following would begin happening this year:

Be also advised of a new wild card in prophecy emerging around the world in earnest in 2010: an escalation of effective and often violent eco-terrorism.

James Lee is such an effective terrorist. A handgun, a satchel of suspicious containers and network cameras forced many of you to read the following extracts from his cry of help.

“The world needs TV shows that DEVELOP solutions to the problems that humans are causing, not stupefy the people into destroying the world. Not encouraging them to breed more environmentally harmful humans…

“You MUST KNOW the human population is behind all the pollution and problems in the world, and YET you encourage the exact opposite instead of discouraging human growth and procreation. Surely you MUST ALREADY KNOW this!”

This sick and desperate man violently brought the whole world’s attention to the essential cause of humanity’s future unsustainability: our inability to moderate our growing numbers which are soon to clear 7 billion resource-consuming and pollution creating souls overtaxing the planetary ecosystem. Lee gave violent voice to the source of Nostradamus’ grim warnings of an oncoming global famine in our future.

The threat of overpopulation is one of the hardest messages to get through to people who are for the most part under the biologically hypnotic drive to procreate. I had taken up this message 20 years ago and altered my life to back my words with action. What James Lee did was insane. He snapped and was perhaps appropriately gunned down. I have chosen to spread this message about birth control with hopefully a more meditative and sober approach.

Although this eco-terrorist criticizes Discovery Channel for not saying enough about the problem of Overpopulation, I would like to come to Discovery Channel’s defense and remind people that Discovery and its affiliates have been at the forefront of educating people with their “Planet Green” shows or brilliant documentaries about the coming ecological crises and needed solutions. I am grateful also that Discovery on occasion has allowed the broadcast of even a prophetic angle on this matter. I recall that in the recent Discovery documentary Nostradamus Decoded, I was allowed to discuss prophecies clearly forecasting an oncoming, unsustainable future if we do not control human population growth.

Discovery Channel IS putting this message out.

Mr. Lee’s rash act today has only snuffed out his life. As soon as his body hit the Discovery Channel office floor, the media cut the live feed and television illumination of his message was also cut, fading to black. Now there lies only the sad remains of a message: a deranged gunman is the only thing left to talk about.

The subject of human overpopulation can hopefully return now to more level headed men and women without the stigma of terrorism overshadowing it.

I began tackling the subject over 20 years ago when I updated the prophetic metaphor of St. John of Patmos‘ Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. I created a new allegory suitable for modern times.

What follows is the short chapter about the trailblazing first of Four Hellriders. The essay was inspired by a choice made in 1990 and was published in 1994 in the Millennium Book of Prophecy.

The electric current in the surgical lamp at the Usha Nursing Home quivered ever so slightly, betraying the fact that this remarkable modern surgery room was situated somewhere in the energy-starved Third World. The twitching electrical glare displayed my fillet of testicle to the competent doctor. With the right apron string to biology and future children cut and the other about to go, the patient laying back on the operating table chose this moment to speak:

“Doctor?” I said with mock severity. “Doc!”

“Yes? Are you feeling any pain?”

“Doctor,” I pressed, not answering his question and putting on my best tone of concern, “You’ve got to tell me the truth — will I ever be able to play the violin again?”

The doctor and his nurse chuckled as they stitched and stanched and cut me loose from fatherhood. For a few weeks my testicles would have lingering pains of some form of primal biological mourning as they got acquainted with life without the ability to inject others with the needed spice for a womb’s brew of life.

I hobbled down the hospital hallway and stepped into the street.

A gritty, burned-out evening (typical of urban India) reeking of diesel exhaust, dung, and the spice of toasted banyan leaves, greeted me in the narrow, backed-up roads. My beloved Nadine [Satgyan] held my hand as we brushed aside a gaggle of street urchins whining for baksheesh (alms). We skirted through throngs of beggars at last reaching a cluster of rickshaws — those three-wheeled black and yellow beetles of the South Asian streets, nearly as numerous as that evening’s mosquitoes. Nadine tucked me inside the revving and coughing metal carapace, which drove this bruised-balled though biologically liberated author back to his hotel room.

Life is hard in the land of exploding birthrates. I had made friends with an earlier generation of street urchins on my first visit to India, ten years before I was sterilized. To my question, “What do you want out of life?” I was surprised to hear them say they wanted to get married and have children. Nine years and nearly two hundred million Indian babies later, I was seeing the effect of their pubescent desires as the rickshaw careened through an ocean of people trudging along under India’s dim and flickering street lights.

I cupped my bruised jewels to protect them; too many potholes break the suspension springs of rickshaws weaving through too many crowds, who do their best to uphold a democracy that suffers too many crushing debts to too many affluent (and sparsely populated) Western nations.

I rode home, glad that in a world becoming ever more crowded with suffering children destined to multiply the suffering, no child will enter this misery of scarce clean water, little food, little education and a lot of disease through my chance biological injections. Though I respect an individual’s choice to have children, I hold the conviction — and seal it with a surgeon’s scalpel — that at this time in history, there are already too many kids to love and too little love to give.

A famine of many dimensions exists. The majority of Earth’s children are starving from lack of love at a time when there is no lack of wombs being impregnated. And the logical conclusion was anticipated over four centuries ago. The prophet Nostradamus forewarns us of the result of overpropagation:

The great famine which I sense approaching will often turn [up] in various areas then become worldwide. It will be so vast and long lasting that they will grab roots from the trees and children from the breast.

This prophecy, made in the mid-sixteenth century, was number 67 in the first volume of his prophetic masterpiece, Les Propheties. In my first book, Nostradamus and the Millennium, I introduced a new theory that Nostradamus might have hidden some of his future dates within the numerical indexing of his over one thousand quatrains.

With this predilection to hide dates in the stanzas, the French seer might have intended quatrain 67 of Century 1 as the year 1967 inaugurating a future global famine. According to the Worldwatch Institute, the year 1967 did see grain production in Africa begin its current and disastrous decline, as well as one million Africans starve to death in the Biafran famine. Since then the world has seen an upsurge of hunger in various areas of Africa and Asia, where accelerating birthrates run mostly unchecked. Too many new consumers of food, fuel, and water devour steadily-decreasing harvests. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared in 1987 that with the birth of the five billionth child, we had already sewed our seed beyond the limit where Earth’s fragile ecosystem will not avoid reaping some degree of dire consequences in the early twenty-first century.

One can already hear the hoofbeats of Overpopulation, the First Hellrider of Doomsday. She personifies our uncontrollable urge to multiply human want and hunger to the point of disaster.

Three children are born every second, making a total of two hundred and fifty thousand new arrivals each day. The momentum of our rapid growth will add another billion mouths to feed and throats to quench between 1991 and 2001. That’s the equivalent of adding an extra China every twelve years. By the turn of the century global population will increase by a hundred million a year. The next billion will be added in eleven years (2011), the next in less than ten years (2020). By 2030, China by itself will require all the current grain exports of the world. By 2025, we will have to build a nuclear power plant every week to keep up with the energy demands of nearly a dozen billion people!

Our birthrate bullet train is heading for a wall called unsustainable food production. This is the point in our near future when an avalanche of new polluters exhaust our dwindling farmland until we cannot sustain even the illusion of nutritional subsistence for half the human race.

A few Third World governments who share the greatest burden of excessive propagation have begun national family planning campaigns, but even the hopeful signs of a slowing birthrate in countries like China and India may be little more than sparks flying off our brakes as our acceleration headlong into a collision with agricultural collapse seems unstoppable. The UN World Food Council in its 1988 report has all but admitted our defeat in the war against hunger and malnutrition. America, the breadbasket of the world, holds the key to sustainable food production and spreading the message of population awareness. The United States led the world in funding an international campaign for family planning until most financial support was withdrawn in 1987. If the program does not resume, many UN globe watchers think stabilization between the death rate and birth rate is not possible for the next hundred years.

By overpopulating their range, human beings create more demand on a dwindling supply; the equation for a future apocalypse by famine. America has seen its global exports of grain and other food staples drop steadily into the red since the late 1980s. If droughts continue to reduce the river of American grain to a trickle, the first decade of the next century could see the nightmare of Ethiopia played out across most of the nations of the developing world who depend on American exports. Food riots could be common in major cities like Cairo, Lagos, Caracas and even Tokyo and St. Petersburg, since they rely almost exclusively on the farmers of America for their daily bread.

The Hellrider of Overpopulation is the undisputed trailblazer for a tomorrow that will be terrifying because humankind is afraid to change its gestalt from being a pack of competing nationals to a confederation of sharing inter-nationals. Following right behind Overpopulation’s hoofs are the Hellriders of Earth Trauma, The Lemming Syndrome, and the Third World’s War.

Humankind has put off facing the many various symptoms of global hyperextension for so long that if any one catastrophic incident foretold by prophecy were fulfilled, it could trigger a domino effect of cascading crises that could overwhelm all the good efforts and newfound awareness of the need for global maintenance arising in the final decade of the twentieth century. What would happen if Los Angeles and Tokyo were devastated by earthquakes, as most seismologists expect to happen sometime in the next thirty years? The loss of Tokyo or LA alone is enough to bring on a severe financial depression. All progress in paying off the global deficit or financing a worldwide crusade against overpopulation could be lost in a few seconds of seismic catharsis. Skyrocketing food exports costs would climb out of reach of starving nations with little capital and a lot of debt. Famines would erupt throughout the Second and Third World, sending millions of refugees over sensitive borders. Regional and ethnic conflicts would increase, but with a new and frightening twist: many of these wars will be fought by developing nations with a new-found chemical and nuclear weapons capability.

American grain not only sustains the developing world but also the Second World, or former Communist bloc. What if American grain reserves ran out and all wheat and corn exports to Russia ceased? The second Russian revolution might fail if the new democrats or totalitarians to follow cannot forestall chronic crop failure and food shortages.

Rapid population growth is the chief source of food insecurity and social instability. The current lack of commitment by today’s political leaders of the early 1990s to pool together and fight an all-out war against overpopulation could still bring on the Third World War by the mid-to-late 1990s, or later in the first decades of the twenty-first century.

Reading this chapter again after so many years gone by, I am struck by how its points have become more topical to our present times and near future. If you want to read more about the other Hellirders of the Apocalypse, each has their full chapter in The Millennium Book of Prophecy. This book looks at 777 prophecies from over 200 sources, ancient and modern. It is split into two halves. In the first half I use a preponderance of collectively shared visions to argue how doomsday is unavoidable. In the second half I used collective prophecy to contradict this premise. Indeed, we do have a choice and a better future forecasted — often by the same prophets. There is a choice. From doomsday we can change the future to a “blooms”-day, the flowering of a golden age. This message does not need a gun, it needs understanding, compassion and love to be heard and acted upon.

The statue of St. Peter the first, and perhaps the last, pope named Peter before the end of days. A popular Protestant conspiracy from the 17th century and later conjured up again in the 19th by the Seventh Day Adventists presumed the Papal Tiara had a Latin inscription taken from the Donation of Constantine. Add the numerical equivalent of Latin letters and reach a sum of 666. Other conspiracy theories have 666 emblazoned on papal miters or tiaras as an abbreviation of Julius Caesar's Latin inscription Vini (Veni), Vidi, Vinci – "I came, I saw, I conquered" -- in the Roman numerals VI VI VI (666). Thus, the Beast of Revelation is a future pope, some believe. This conspiracy theory was soundly debunked in the 20th century. I will write about it in detail in the future. For today's blog, I mention it only because Nostradamus seems to apply hints to the "pope-as-antichrist" in these prophecies using another lead.

Quatrain 66 of Century 6 has Catholic prophet Nostradamus using the number of the Beast in Revelation to tie the discovery of a great Roman’s tomb with either an earthquake as a metaphor for religious upheaval or literally he implies a tomb uncovered around the time of a natural disaster and/or quake. In both possible interpretations, the Church is undergoing an apostasy: the opening stage of undermined faith in laity and leadership alike expected in the Catholic version of the Apocalypse. I disseminated in great detail the thrust of collected visions of the Apostasy, Roman Catholic Apocalypse and visions of a subsequent Age of the Holy Spirit beyond the need of churches here: see Apostasy. The latter prophecies either speak of a completely new world religion or a new renaissance of what it is to be universal happens after the Catholic Apocalypse — what the Greek word Katholicós means. Nostradamus’ prophecies imply that the embrace of a larger universal understanding of God and existence transpires sometime after the bones of the great Roman, which is either St. Peter or St. Paul, are found.

Quatrain 66 of Century 6 reads:

Au fondement de la nouuelle secte,
Seront les oz du grand Romain trouués,
Sepulchre en marbre apparoistra couuerte,
Terre trembler en Auril, mal enfouez.

At the founding of a new sect,
The bones of the great Roman will be found,
The sepulcher covered by marble will appear,
The earth trembles in April, badly buried.

In part two of the series (see 666) we followed an interesting lead suggested by “CJ” that the Aquila quake in Italy of April 2009 happened close enough to the discovery of bones purported to be relics of St. Paul to make him that great Roman, not St. Peter. Just a few months later scientific carbon dating proved that the bones hail from the times of St. Paul. The tomb under the altar of the Church of St. Paul just outside the Vatican walls is made of white marble. Pope Benedict XVI announced the discovery of the tomb on 12/6/06 (Twelve is 6 X 6) of the 6th day (666) in 2006 (or, 2 X 6 = 12). The quatrain is 66 of Century 6 (666).

Now, before we get too Aposta-sassy about this surprising number of sleuth-sayer hits, let us see how Nostradamus in another quatrain may give us similar clues that actually match the moldy bones of another “great Roman” besides the Apostle Paul. Century 9 Quatrain 84 reads:

Roy exposé parfaira L’hecatombe,
Apres auoir trouué son origine:
Torrent ouurir de marbre & plomb la tombe
D’vn grand Romain d’enseigne Medusine.

The King exposed will complete the slaughter,
After having found his origin:
A torrent to open the tomb of marble and lead
Of the great Roman with the Medusine device.

The great Nostradamus scholar Edgar Leoni gives us the Latin Medusaeus, for Medusa whose serpent-topped head turned all onlookers to stone. Lee McCann believes it is an anagram Deus in Me the motto of Saint Peter. I would add that the name Peter, or pierre in French, means “stone.” The Medusa that can turn people into stone may be Nostradamus nasty description of the final Pope of the foretold Apocalypse who he infers elsewhere in is prophecies will be named Peter.

The Medieval Irish prophet, St. Malachy, purportedly came to the same conclusion several hundred years before Nostradamus in his famous papal prophecies. In 1138, Malachy purportedly predicted the last pope of the Vatican during the apocalypse would be named Peter. Over the centuries, many believed the average life expectancy of pontiffs, placed the succession of the final pope on his list around, or shortly after, the dawning of the new millennium.

These prophecies were rediscovered around 1595. They hint of 111 successors to St. Peter’s throne from the times of St. Malachy to the end times, each pontiff cryptically described by two-to-three word Latin mottoes. A paragraph plays coda describing the 112th and final pope of Judgment Day.

These fascinating prophecies may have been written a half-a-century “after” Nostradamus’ quatrains by a man hiding his true identity under the nom-de-plume of the famous St. Malachy. Thirty-six popes were foretold in the list unto the Catholic apocalypse beyond 1595. The usual forgery should have fallen flat once hindsight was no longer aiding its phony prophet. Instead, the remaining mottoes’ accuracy beyond the potential forger’s publication is remarkably high. Read more of the complete details here: Last Pope.

There is a reoccurring theme in Catholic eschatology. Nostradamus and other seers predict vast natural disasters and/or wars destined to unearth the tomb of Saint Peter in the ruins of the Vatican after a great flood and fire. Nostradamus in the following quatrain is less vague than 6 Q66 about which great Roman he is intending the apocalypse to uncover. Living closer to the end time might have sharpened his insight.

Nostradamus wrote verse 6 Q66 in 1556. Verse 84 of Century 9 was set down one to two years later. Maybe his second glimpse of the future was clearer than the first. He might have seen the uncovering of St. Paul’s tomb and mistook that sepulcher for the first pope who will be named like the last, Peter. Clearly, the unearthing in the second prophecy alludes to a natural or man-made catastrophe. The quake is not in Aquila in 2009 but toppling the Vatican itself in the near future.

The current Pope Benedict is the second-to-last pope in St. Malachy’s list. He is in his eighties; so a few years hence will come his successor, the Last Pope. There is an unwritten rule. No pope can use the name of the first Pope. Could Nostradamus have confused his “great Romans”? Could the last pope then be named “Paul” — Pope Paul VII?

Time and events will soon answer that question, perhaps before 2015. I have often sensed over the decades that Nostradamus great Roman and Malachy’s Peter the Roman would rule during what I call the Roaring 2020s. This is the decade when unsustainable economic, social and ecological habits of humanity meet a catastrophic reckoning if destiny’s inclination does not change.

Bishop Malachy, reclining on the Janiculum with his flock of Irish monks, relaxed against the sensation of the earth exhaling the heat of the day. The wrinkles around his pale eyes softened as the glare of sun-reflected stone surrendered to the cool colors of the approaching night. As he watched the great city slip behind the bed sheets of its lengthening shadows, his attendants saw him begin to cry.

Just as Jesus once wept before Jerusalem, a future saint now washed his vision of Rome. But unlike the Messiah who had been the Irish bishop’s reason for dedicating his life to monastic discipline and the mortification of the flesh, Malachy’s tears were the overflow of an inner ecstasy.

St. Malachy (1094-1148).

The bishop cried himself to sleep. His monks stood watch in the darkness over their master, not daring to disturb his motionless form, which seemed cast in a palpable silent presence. Not long after the stars defined the shadow spires of Rome and the trees of the Janiculum hill vibrated with the rhythmic mantras of cicadas, a voice called out within their midst. It was as though a loving finger carefully and softly tapped each man on the shoulder of their contemplation, making then startle.

“Rome…”

The bishop’s scribe drew close to his master’s face.

“Rome…” whispered Malachy again.

The scribe could barely make out the movement of his master’s lips. The white crescent moons of the bishop’s eyes caught the starlight just as his eyelids closed to a trance. For a time his dream gaze moved rapidly, dancing over the topography of some fantastic inner sight. Then they relaxed, and an unknown presence within the man descended to work his lips, letting pass a Latin phrase. Normal sleep seemed to return for a time before the eyes of the bishop would rove across the inner screen of a new vision and the lips would deposit another phrase.

By daybreak the weary scribe smothered the last of several candles and witnessed the ascension of the rising sun casting its first blush on the drying quill strokes of 111 Latin phrases on yellow parchment.

The bishop, now awake from his dream, explained that God had given him a vision of every pope to reign after the current pontiff (Innocent II) until the end of time when God would judge the world.

Some will say the facts of this medieval story come to us clothed in the fantasy weave of an apocryphal Renaissance gown. Critics agree that St. Malachy and his monks mounted the Janiculum hill, but claim that no prophecy was uttered there. They say that the scribe who wrote down his ecstatic outpourings did so with fresh Renaissance ink on old medieval parchment four and a half centuries later. But as we will see, the truth of these prophetic assertions can still cause the whispering cloth of fable to rustle as she strides into our time. And if we can investigate the naked essence of these prophecies without being distracted by the covering of potential myth, we could find before us an authentic and powerful list of predictions chronicling the decline and fall of the Church of Rome.

Whether these Latin phrases were composed in 1140 or by someone in the 1590s under the pseudonym of a medieval saint, their author is a prophet. If his assertion is true, the papal succession is finite. We who live in these first years of the third millennium after Christ, and mark 19 April 2010 as the five year anniversary of Cardinal Ratzinger papacy as Pope Benedict XVI, are but one passing of a pope away from the era of the last pope in the St. Malachy list unto the Catholic Apocalypse.

This week begins with ash clouds from an Icelandic eruption causing the greatest disruption of global air transportation in history with 63,000 flights cancelled across Europe and 7 million people stranded. Today also heralds a cloud of another kind overshadowing the Vatican. This is year five in a papacy foretold 800 years ago in a vision of apostasy for the Roman Catholic Church.

The spiritual crisis in faith is ongoing. April’s shocking revelations of rampant child abuse by priests only indicate how accurate was the vision locked in the Latin motto describing the future crisis of the current pontiff.

This is the Cardinal under Pope John Paul II who sheltered child-abusing priests from justice as his predecessor’s Grand Inquisitor (called more euphemistically today, the Prefect of the Congregation of the Doctrine and the Faith). Ratzinger was specifically empowered to oversee and weed out such predators in the priesthood.

This is the same Cardinal Ratzinger who issued a version of the long suppressed yet much anticipated revealing of the third and final Prophecy of Fatima. The document uncealed in 2000 did not match key and well known elements revealed by its author, Sister Lucia dos Santos.
